Nelson Wins IFA Kayak Fishing Tour Event at Jacksonville, Florida

Kayak angler takes home more than $2,600 in prize money

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (March 22, 2017) – Ty Nelson, of Gulfport, Florida, measured a combined limit of 67.25 inches to win the first 2017 regular-season event for the Florida East Division of the IFA Kayak Fishing Tour presented by Hobie Fishing on March 19 at Jacksonville, Florida.

Changing conditions can make for a tough day on the water for any angler. Nelson was no exception to this during tournament day.

“The wind switched from predominantly northeast all week to a west wind on tournament day,” said Nelson. “This made finding fish a bit more difficult than it was during pre-fishing,” said Nelson. “Around 10 a.m., the wind laid down, which ultimately help me catch my big red.”

Nelson fished the Mosquito Lagoon area by anchoring his Power-Pole Micro Anchor to fan-cast for trout and sight-cast to schools for redfish.

“Given the wind, I was very pleased with my performance,” Nelson said.

Nelson won $1,500 along with a Power-Pole Micro Anchor with spike for his first-place finish. The angler’s 45-inch redfish won the $100 Berkley Gulp! Big Redfish award and he added $375 in Anglers Advantage cash.

Thaddeus Day, of Port St. Lucie, Florida, measured a combined total of 62 inches to take the $1,000 first place prize. The angler added $225 in Anglers Advantage cash.

Day stayed close to the weigh-in site and also experienced the effects of the winds.

“I stuck with my plan even with the high winds and fast currents,” said Day. “I was jigging deep with Gulp! on a First Light Tackle snook jig and then hit a smaller ledge jigging with a soft bait. I was pleased with the outcome but very tired.”

Third-place finisher Steve Bond, of Jacksonville, Florida, measured a 23-inch redfish and a 23.38 trout to win $195. Fourteenth-place finisher Blake Beltz failed to land a redfish but did win the $100 Berkley Gulp! Big Trout award for his 24.63-inch trout.

The next stop for the IFA Kayak Tour is Port Aransas, Texas, on April 1. Anglers who enter at least a minimum of two events and compete in at least one event will be qualified for the 2017 IFA Kayak Tour Championship.
