IFA Redfish Tour event pays out more than $49,000
EW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (March 22, 2017) – Jesse Rain and Luis Jaramillo, both of Jacksonville, Florida, weighed a two-fish limit that totaled 13.71 pounds to win the first event for the Florida East Division of the IFA Redfish Tour presented by Cabela’s on March 18 at Jacksonville, Florida.
In their four years fishing the IFA Redfish Tour, the anglers have two wins, one second-place and 11th-place finishes. The local anglers target the Sister’s Creek area knowing it would hold schools of redfish in the low tide.
“The tide is pretty much the most important thing, at least in north Florida,” said Rain. “We timed out our fishing spot based upon what the tide was doing. We knew some schools would be located there with that tide.”
The anglers fished the flats along the Intracoastal Waterway by drifting and searching for schools to target with Berkley Gulp! three-inch shrimp.
“We caught them pretty quick,” said Rain. “The rest of the day we caught some more keepers but nothing bigger.”
The anglers won a new fully rigged Ranger RB190 with a 90 horsepower Mercury outboard, valued at $26,800. They also added the $500 Berkley Big Fish Award and a $250 credit from Berkley for catching their 7.65-pound redfish on Berkley Gulp!.
“The IFA is the pinnacle of redfish tournament fishing,” said Rain. “They have been around for a very long time so it’s a long-term, successful organization. They always gave good turnouts with good camaraderie. And, as far as Florida is concerned, the IFA has the biggest payouts.”
Second-place finishers Brad Safreed, of Green Cove Springs, Florida, and Scott Jones, of Jacksonville, Florida, weighed 13.55 pounds for the $3,466 prize money. The team fared better then they expected by throwing spinnerbaits around jetties.
J.D. Nobles, of St. Johns, Florida, and Kyle Craven were close behind with 13.42 pounds to win $2,166 and more than doubled their winnings with $2,730 in Anglers Advantage cash for a total of $4,896. The team ran 20 miles north of the ramp where they sight-casted Berkley Gulp! for their two-fish limit.
The next stop for the IFA Redfish Tour is April 1 at Port Aransas, Texas. Teams that compete in at least two regular-season events will be qualified for the 2017 IFA Redfish Tour Championship.
